de Havilland H3 Turbo-prop

This is a prototype of the H3. It is a small, light propeller turbine which developed 500 hp.

As well as developing Jet engines, shortly after the end of World War Two (1946/47), Halford and his team started working on a Turbo-Prop engine. The idea of a turbo-prop engine is that the power comes from a jet engine, but at the same time it also drives a propellor. So, in theory, it combines the benefits of both types of engines.

It has a two-stage centrifugal compressor coupled to a three-stage turbine. The turbine drives the propeller through a reduction gear.

If it had been successful, it would have been a useful alternative to the Gipsy Queen, in light aircraft and small, feeder airliners such as the DH. 104 Dove.

However, the H3 never saw production. It was only run on the testbed, and development terminated when the Government withdrew support.
