Museum benefits from Dulux Paint’s community project

September 2024: Staff from Dulux UK repainted several buildings at the de Havilland Aircraft
Museum at London Colney.

The initiative was prompted by a chance conversation between the Museum’s
president, Philip Birtles and William Gutch from Dulux. Initially, Dulux offered to
support the external renovation of the Museum’s Sea Vixen, however this was
extended to include the painting of several buildings as part of the “Lets Colour”
Community Engagement Programme.

Project Leaders William Gutch and Steven Plowman with support from Regional
Sales Manager Ian Gisbourne, organised ten staff, from sales and technical
departments to deliver the project over two days.

Senior Colour Designer Dawn Scott carefully researched 1940s colours to recreate
an accurate camouflage design, allowing Senior Technical Support Manager Abbie
Churchill to select more modern paint products. Camouflage was essential as the
site was the secret centre for the design and development of the ‘Wooden Wonder’,
the de Havilland Mosquito.

Technical staff from Dulux will continue to support the Museum’s aim of introducing
more sustainable paint products in future. Annually, Dulux’s parent company,
AkzoNobel, colours the lives of over a million people globally through its Community
Engagement Programmes.

Jonathan Fulwell, the Museum General Manager said, ‘We’ve been delighted with
Dulux UK’s enthusiasm and commitment to the redecoration project. The attention to
detail, such as replicating the 1940s camouflage colours, is remarkable. It really
enhances the appearance of those buildings. Thank you’
